“Defend your dream”, Román Ruiz

When doctors told him that he could not fend for himself, Román Ruiz promised to reverse that sentence by clinging to the great passion of his life: sports.

Román’s life was transformed in an instant, after combining his studies with FIME and basketball, a specialist diagnosed him with a tumor on his head.

“In 2011 I was representing the basketball team in FIME, every day I trained and was passionate about the sport. I started to lose skills, lose my balance, I no longer had coordination as before, I had problems with my vision. When I went to the specialist It was seen that he had a tumor on his head and he told me that it was urgent to operate on it because if it continued to grow there would be more damage, “recalls the Sinaloa-born, but royal by adoption.

Something went wrong with the operation and there was damage to the central nervous system.

They told him that the damage was irreparable, that not only would he not be able to return to the sport, but that it would be impossible to fend for himself.

“I ignored him and continued doing my exercises at home, then I looked for a park. I knew that before my operation there was a Roman who could do everything and wanted to be like that Roman,” says the now 32-year-old para-athlete and graduated from Mechatronics at FIME.

Remember that he looked like a “zombie”, that he struggled to take steps and coordinate.

But after some time in his native Sinaloa he returned to Nuevo León, where he began working with Erwin Laberdesque on the shot put.

Its development has been meteoric, it won a bronze in the last Parapan American Games and now it has its sights set on Tokyo.

“We achieved the unimaginable, I say it and it gives me the chinita skin. We had parameter to give the mark, but not so much. That positioned us to go to Tokyo and we are only waiting for the official list and continue with our goal that is to be an Olympic champion, “he confidently sentences.

His words are much more than a simple bravado, if he managed to overcome the adverse medical prognoses, who doubts now that he can fulfill his dream and hang a gold around his neck?
