Cristian Garín excites all Chilean tennis at Roland Garros

Franco Davín he is one of the best coaches on the circuit. Without posing with the brightest sign on the block, the Argentine led Gastón Gaudio and Juan Martín Del Potro to win a Grand Slam title and dreams of repeating the feat with Cristian Garin. Although there is still too much left and his chances seem -a priori- remote, the Chilean feels comfortable playing on clay and, in that sense, is already in the fourth round of the Parisian tournament after having beaten Marcos Giron in four sets.

– The feelings of the victory against the American

Today’s game I had dominated until 5-2 of the second set. There, I got a little insecure, I got a little tense, I lost concentration for a moment and on top of that he raised his level. Despite that, in general I played at a great level. I was super solid and not doing anything weird. We are in a tournament in which everyone plays well and in which they are here for something. Luckily, today I was able to play much better than in the previous rounds and I hope to continue in the same way because I have not finished finding myself as I would like.

– What do you need to improve in the next matches?

I think I have to be more convinced when I attack. Although today I did better than other days, I know that I can continue to improve it. In addition, the playing conditions were very different from the first two rounds given that it was less hot, it was much wetter, the tracks were slower and more similar to the typical clay courts and all that favored me. Anyway, I have to keep improving and I have to go step by step.

– Do comparisons with other Chilean legends such as Fernando González, Nicolás Massú or Chino Ríos bother you?

The truth is that they have been comparing me with them since I was 16 years old. I’ve worked my whole life to be here and I have to play better if I want to keep moving forward. Honestly, it does not generate anything for me because since I can remember I hear those comparisons with the best in the history of my country. It is worth thinking about that now because I just want to enjoy and be able to do my best in my next game.

– Precisely, Daniil Medvedev is coming, who left Reilly Opelka on the road

He may not like the land, but he is still a great player. In addition, he has had very good victories on this surface and is number 2 in the ranking. I don’t think about how he feels, but about continuing to improve. Luckily, I feel good physically, which is very positive, and I will try to win as I do in every game. Yes, he is a very tough opponent and I respect him a lot.

– He already beat the Russian in Madrid a few weeks ago …

It is difficult to analyze and compare it with the Madrid match because it occurred under other conditions. There is a lot of height there and here everything depends on the weather. If there is sun, the court becomes very fast. Later, the other day it was very windy, today it was humid and the track was super slow. Personally, I like today’s conditions better and that it can be played as normal on clay.
