Chauncey Billups is the new head coach of the Portland Trail Blazers

The Portland Trail Blazers may have struck gold in their search for a new coach. According to consistent media reports, Clippers assistant Chauncey Billups will be in charge of Portland’s affairs from the coming season.

The Blazers offered the former final MVP of the Detroit Pistons the job on Friday evening, now details such as the length of the contract are still being negotiated. Shams Charania (The Athletic) leaned out the window enough to report that Billups will accept the offer.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski (ESPN) Superstar Damian Lillard was also involved in the search for a new coach, the point guard has a good relationship with the 44-year-old, who is now getting his first chance as head coach. Billups does not have much experience. Billups has only been working as Ty Lue’s assistant at the Clippers since the current season, previously he was employed by the Californians as a TV expert.

Terry Stotts had previously directed the fortunes in Oregon for nine years, eight times in a row the playoffs were reached. With the exception of the 2018/19 season, when Portland advanced to the Conference Finals, the first round has always been over since 2016.

Now Billups can try, “Mr. Big Shot” was one of three alternatives for the Blazers. In addition to the former playmaker, Portland also spoke to Mike D’Antoni (Assistant Coach Nets) and Becky Hammon (Assistant Coach Spurs). For Hammon, owner Jody Allen in particular had stood up, but in the end the Blazers decided against making a woman head coach for the first time in NBA history.
