The squad of the BG Göttingen for the coming season in the basketball Bundesliga is getting bigger and bigger. Philipp Hartwich will wear the violet jersey in the coming season. The moving van only has to drive just under 200 kilometers when Hartwich moves on from Weißenfels on the A38 in the direction of Göttingen. “Philipp brings a very interesting mixture of length and mobility. He is known for protecting the basket well on the defensive, ”says BG head coach Roel Moors about the 25-year-old. “I’m happy about his signing and I’m looking forward to working with Philipp and helping him make progress.” Hartwich was the longest player in the BBL until Alba Berlin signed Christ Koumadje this year. The Alba-Center from Chad still has three centimeters more to show than the newcomer from Göttingen.

For Hartwich, who was born and raised in Cologne, last season in Weißenfels was his first professional station in his home country. The center played 33 league and three cup games for the “wolves”. On average, the newcomer to the league played around 16 minutes, scored 4.2 points and got 3.5 rebounds. He also got an average of 1.7 blocks per game – more than any other BBL player.

The Rhinelander started his basketball career late in the U18 area of his home club Cologne 99ers, with whom he made promotion to the 1st regional league in 2014. After graduating from high school, Hartwich decided to study in the USA and moved to the University of Portland (Oregon), where he went basket-hunting for the Portland Pilots. From 2014 to 2018 he completed 117 games for his college team and also stood out there as a shot blocker. In his senior year, the center came to 2.3 blocks per game and got 7.9 rebounds.

After graduating from university, he moved to Spain in the second division (LEB Gold). In the 2018/19 season he played for CB Penas Huesca, the following season for Melilla Balancesto. In 58 games, the German averaged 5.7 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.5 blocks at both clubs before moving back to his home country in the summer of 2020.

Those in charge of Syntainics MBC had already announced the departure of Hartwich at the weekend, who used an exit clause in his two-year contract, which runs until the end of the 2021/22 season, to switch. The two top players Michal Michalak and Quinton Hooker had previously left the MBC. The Weißenfelser want to introduce their new head coach soon. He will succeed Silvano Poropat, who played 208 games on the sidelines of the MBC.

The Veilchen squad for the 2021/22 season now includes Mathis Mönninghoff, Akeem Vargas, Haris Hujic and Philipp Hartwich, four players with a German passport. The American Jake Toolson was the first foreign signing before last weekend.
