Baseball, a sport that enters and leaves the Olympic Games – El Sol de Toluca

Despite the fact that baseball is an ancient sport, it has not always been part of the Olympic Games, it was in some editions as an exhibition sport, from 1992 to 2008 it was admitted to contest the medals but it was no longer in London 2012 or Brazil 2016, however it returns for Tokyo 2021.

For this year’s summer fair, Japan proposed to add this sport again, as it is very popular in the country, and the International Olympic Committee accepted it along with others such as skateboarding and surfing, however it is not considered for the Paris edition 2024.

Baseball has been part of Olympic jousts since 1904, from that moment it was considered in several Olympics (1912, 1936, 1956, 1964, 1984 and 1988) as an exhibition sport where 17 countries have participated, among which Cuba and Japan.

In 1986 and then at the 1992 Barcelona Olympics, the IBA world organization did not reach 100 member nations. However, until 2008 five summer editions of the ball were held, until the International Olympic Committee (IOC) itself in its conclave on July 7, 2005 excluded it along with softball from the London 2012 appointment, separating 16 from that stage. countries and more than 300 athletes.

The decision was based on the lack of universality of the modality, the same argument with which the aspiration to return in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2016 was frustrated. It was not until August 3, 2020 when the return in Tokyo, as detailed in the article entitled: Why is baseball not a permanent Olympic sport ?, published on the Granma portal on October 1, 2020.

But its permanence in the following editions seems that it is not assured, since according to information from Baseball America the IOC in its program for Paris 2024 does not consider baseball.

The argument is that the IOC regulations approved in 2014, for the updating of the program, up to five new disciplines can be added to permanent sports in each edition, one of which stands out in Paris 2024 is breakdance with the aim of reaching to the young public.
