Austin Meadows produced five runs in a convincing 9-2 victory for the Tampa Bay Rays over the Yankees on Thursday in New York.

Employed as a designated hitter, Meadows first hit his 14th long ball of the season in the fourth inning, allowing Brandon Lowe to cross the plate. In the seventh, his double allowed three of his teammates to score.

While Meadows is having a very good 2021 season, Brett Gardner is not, who, at 37, is showing big signs of slowing down at batting. The veteran Yankees still got his first homer of the year, in the third assault.

It was also by taking a ball out of the field that Miguel Andujar produced the home team’s second point, at the end of the seventh inning.

Ryan Yarbrough (3-3) played the entire game on the mound for the Rays. The victorious gunner gave six hits to opposing hitters, also going for six strikeouts. Gerrit Cole (6-3) added loss to his record, allowing five runs in as many innings.

No problem for the Rockies

In Denver, the Colorado Rockies triumphed over the struggling Texas Rangers by a score of 11-6.

After six innings, the Rockies held a nine-point lead. Even four points from their opponents in the final round weren’t enough to worry them.

Charlie Blackmon and Brendan Rodgers each had three points. Khris Davis and Jose Trevino notably stretched their arms for two points on the side of the Rangers.

This is the ninth consecutive loss for the Texas team.

Again Swanson

In Atlanta, Dansby Swanson continued to shine for the Braves, who beat the Washington Nationals 5-1.

The 27-year-old shortstop struck to safety in his 12th straight game, reaching the plateau of 500 career hits. His unequivocal home run in the fourth inning put the Braves ahead by four points.

Ozzie Albies and Austin Riley were behind Atlanta’s other points.

Veteran reliever Josh Tomlin maintained his perfect record this season with a third win in as many decisions. Tucker Davidson, who preceded him on the mound, had given only one hit and five walks to the “Nats” in five innings and two thirds.
