ATP MAJORCA – Novak Djokovic and Carlos Gomez-Herrera qualified but forfeited for the doubles final

Novak Djokovic had to give up on Thursday to play in the men’s doubles final at the Mallorca grass tournament due to a foot injury to his partner Carlos Gomez-Herrera. Together with the Spaniard, the Serbian qualified by beating the pair of Austrian Oliver Marach and Pakistani Aisam-ul-Haq Qureshi, seeded No. 3, in straight sets 6-3, 7-6 (7/4). “Novak Djokovic and Carlos Gomez-Herrera withdrew from the doubles final of the Mallorca tournament (Gomez-Herrera foot injury)”, ATP said in a statement.

A single double title for Djokovic

“We weren’t expecting to reach the final but we are returning well, we are serving very well and we have a really solid game at the net. Everything has been going super well for both of us the last few days,” the Serbian reacted after the meeting. Djokovic only plays in doubles from time to time and has won only one title in this specialty, in 2010 at Queen’s, already on grass, with the Israeli Jonathan Erlich.

The pair were to face in the final either the Italian Simone Bolelli and the Argentinian Maximo Gonzalez, or the Austrian Philipp Oswald and the New Zealander Marcus Daniell. A recent winner at Roland Garros, Djokovic is aiming for a sixth title at Wimbledon, where he won the last two editions in 2018 and 2019, that of 2020 having been canceled due to the pandemic. A twentieth Grand Slam coronation would allow him to join Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer.
