Arnautovic: “Always said: fans are the most important thing” – football

3: 1! At the start of the EURO in Bucharest against North Macedonia, Austria celebrated its first victory at a European Championship. Marko Arnautovic was one of the protagonists of the historic success.

The China legionnaire was not in the starting line-up. He had only reported fit shortly before the start of the tournament after an injury. When team boss Franco Foda Arnautovic and Michael Gregoritsch came on after just under an hour when the score was 1: 1, he changed the dynamics of the game.

Austria took command. First Gregoritsch scored 2: 1 (78th). Then Arnautovic made the decision (90th).

The ÖFB hero about the game: “It is a huge step that we can win the game 3-1. We are ready for more, but we have to recover well. Regardless of who is on the pitch, we all have to give everything.”

The meaning of his hit? “To make the 3: 1 at the Euro is a nice feeling. I said it won’t be easy – that’s how it was.”

The fans who traveled with him played a key role for him. 13,000 spectators were allowed into the stadiums – 2000 fans per nation. Arnautovic: “I’ve always said that the fans are the most important thing. It’s a great feeling that they’re back. You finally feel like a footballer again.”

Incidentally, Arnautovic’s interview was not shown on TV. The reason: he had to go to the doping control after the final whistle.
