Two-time major winner Angel Cabrera has been extradited to his home country Argentina to face assault charges against his girlfriend.
The 51-year-old was arrested in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil earlier this year and transferred to Argentina custody on Tuesday.
Cabrera had been on the run since last August after his inability to attend a meeting with prosecutors in Cordoba after his partner Cecilia Torres Mana accused him of beating her.
She filed an assault allegation in December 2016, claiming he punched her in the face.
Two other women, including his ex-wife, subsequently filed a complaint against him for domestic violence.
According to a police statement, Cabrera faces charges of minor injuries, threats and theft that allegedly occurred between 2016 and 2020
Prosecutor Laura Battistelli said he would be tried for the July 1 case, with other allegations still under investigation.
“He is being detained because the court found him to be evading trial,” she said.
Cabrera rose to prominence in 2007 when he stood up to Jim Furyk and Tiger Woods to win the US Open, the tournament’s first victory by a South American golfer.
He continued in 2009 with a victory at the Augusta Masters. He nearly regained the title four years later, losing in the playoffs to Adam Scott.
Known as El Pato (Spanish for “the duck”) due to his waddling gait, he last performed competitively in 2020, ending his career with 52 tournament wins.
