Abhishek Verma, Indians Jyothi Surekha Vennam ranked highest after qualifying round

Paris: Abhishek Verma and Jyothi Surekha Vennam emerged as the top ranked Indians with their respective 11th and 15th places in the qualifying round of the men’s and women’s sections in the 3rd round of the Archery World Cup.

In their first international competition in about two years, the archers in the Indian compound looked rusty.

Verma, a two-time World Cup champion, scored 706 points. Aman Saini was next best at 21st (704) and was followed by modest 42nd (697) from Rajat Chauhan.

The trio had 2,107 points and came sixth to create a first-round showdown against Sweden, which is ranked 11th.

The Indian women’s team finished sixth with 2,066 points and will face France in eleventh place in the first-round knockout match.

Individually, Jyothi scored 695 points to rank 15th, while Saanchi Dhalla (690) and Akshita (681) came in 22nd and 32nd respectively.

In the mixed couples event, Verma and Jyothi are in ninth place and will qualify for the round of 16, where they will face Russia, who is in eighth place.

The Indian archers had last competed at the Asian Championships in Bangkok in November 2019, where the Verma and Vennam pairing defeated Chinese Taipei to win a gold medal.

The composite team was forced to withdraw from the first round of the World Cup in Guatemala after their coach’s “false positive” report about COVID-19 .
