Water in the gas for Dennis Schröder at the Lakers?

Authors of a flamboyant transfer window on paper last fall, the Lakers have nevertheless not seen all their recruits justify the expectations. One of those who did, Dennis Schröder, did it brilliantly. Recent rumors, however, point to a possible short-term separation between the two parties …

Montrezl Harrel, Marc Gasol, Wes Matthews… when the free agency 2021 closed its doors, everyone agreed on the fact that the Lakers had made brilliant purchases. The reality was unfortunately not so rosy, some recruits having difficulty adjusting to their new environment. At the same time, the injury of LeBron James seriously affected Los Angeles results, with the past few weeks unconvincing.

Among those who convinced during these difficult times, there is in particular Dennis Schröder. Author of 15.4 points and 5.8 assists per game, the former Hawks, however, seems frustrated in California. An impression confirmed by Jake Fischer, of Bleacher Report. This one has indeed teased a probable departure of the German international from this summer:

Many league executives who rubbed shoulders with Schröder told Bleacher Report that they believe DS is looking to get paid as a top-level playmaker, and that his role in Los Angeles may not satisfy his interest in being the lead playmaker of a leading franchise.

Let us recall in passing that Schröder has already refused an extension this season, to the tune of 84 million over four years. A very nice sum, but which did not convince the leader, persuaded to be worth more, both sportingly and financially. As for a possible base far from California, Fischer directs his gaze to the East Coast, and more specifically to New York:

The Knicks are considering recruiting him during the free agency, according to some sources. It is likely that the Knicks will renew Derrick Rose as a reliable replacement for coach Tom Thibodeau, but Schröder could be the solution to fill the void in their opening squad.

A Schröder-Rose rotation as a point guard is intriguing, with both men bringing scoring, experience and skill to the cast. The German could also benefit from the time spent alongside the MVP 2011 to refine his leadership, which has been called into question on multiple occasions. The Knicks would thus obtain a real general to accompany Julius Randle, excellent this season.

The upcoming offseason could be hectic for the Lakers. Between disappointing players and those with desires elsewhere, the movements seem inevitable. A departure from Schröder would pose a lot of problems for the point guard, however, since LeBron would find himself very alone.
