Thierry Henry Returns to the Belgian National Team

Former France national team player Thierry Henry will rejoin the Belgian coaching staff for their Euro 2020 European championship.

Henry served as second assistant to manager Roberto Martinez during Belgium’s 2018 World Cup where they reached the semifinals and eventually finished third.

Henry, Arsenal’s all-time leading goalscorer, was later promoted to main assistant to Martinez before he became manager of Monaco in October 2018.

The Belgian national team tweeted: “Unfinished business. We welcome back Thierry Henry as staff for # EURO2020! ”

Henry most recently served as manager of the MLS team Montreal Impact before stepping down from his post in February.

The 43-year-old, who has also played for Barcelona and Monaco, was supposed to be part of the BBC’s team of pundits for the Euro 2020 tournament.

But he has already announced his resignation from the post.

“It is with great sadness that I can no longer be with all my friends and the incredible team at the BBC during this summer’s European Championships,” Henry said in a BBC statement.

“When I was asked to rejoin the Belgian national team staff, it was an opportunity that couldn’t be turned down.”

“I am very grateful for the understanding the BBC has shown in allowing me to take this opportunity.”

Belgium, considered among the favorites to win the tournament, have been paired with Russia, Finland and Denmark in Group B. They open against Russia on June 12.
