The United States’ Olympic 3×3 basketball team was eliminated by the Netherlands at a tournament in Graz, Austria on Sunday, so they will not attend the Tokyo World Cup this summer.
The 21-16 defeat in the quarterfinals eliminated the US team, which were aiming for one of three Olympic tickets in the 2021 FIBA tournament. The United States had won their group, despite losing a game to Belgium. .
The United States won the 3×3 World Cup in 2019 and is currently ranked No. 2 in the world, behind Serbia, making it one of the big favorites for this pre-Olympic.
On the team are former Purdue and Timberwolves player Robbie Hummel, first draft pick Dominique Jones, former Princeton player Kareem Maddox and NBA G League player Canyon Berry.
3×3 basketball is played in less than 10 minutes, and 1 and 2 points are awarded, up to 21. There is also a 12-second shooting time trial and the ball is smaller in dimensions than the NBA ball.
