Roger Federer: Schweizer is looking forward to a comeback and is deliberately modest in Geneva

In March, Federer returned to the tour after two knee operations and a break of more than a year in Qatar. After that, however, he retired to training again. Now he is celebrating his comeback in Geneva.

There he will start the tournament today, Tuesday, in the second round against Pablo Andujar. In the run-up to the event, the Swiss faced the media present and made explicit statements about his physical condition.

“I haven’t suffered any setbacks since then,” said the world star, who emphasized that he had increased his strength, endurance and agility.

Due to the lack of match practice, his form is difficult to assess with a view to Roland-Garros (live on Eurosport from May 30th). “At the moment I cannot compare myself to the current performances of the others, I need about ten games to know where I am,” said Federer.

Federer on Geneva: “More than just a small test”

Federer’s luck: Thanks to the “freezing” of world ranking points due to the corona pandemic, the Swiss is currently still in eighth place on the ATP list, which means that he is initially drawn to weaker opponents at the tournaments.

However, the 20-time major winner is of the opinion that he currently does not deserve to be in this position. On the contrary, “I should actually be the 800 in the world now because I haven’t played in all these months”, the world star admitted to “TV Lehman Bleu”.

“But if my knee and my fitness are not 100 percent, I can’t hold out forever,” said the veteran. Federer also jokingly pointed out that he was far better than the number 800, “when I am maximally operational”.

The tournament in Geneva is therefore “a test to see whether I can play several tournaments in a row. Now I have this one and Roland-Garros in front of me, two tournaments that should get me back on track,” said the Basel native about his comeback.
