Remco Evenepoel leaves Giro: “Continuing with pain makes no sense” | Giro

Due to his fall in the Giro, Remco Evenepoel will no longer start tomorrow in the 18th stage. “It is a shame that I have to leave the game too early, but it was a great experience”, says Evenepoel.

Evenepoel: “Fall should not have happened”

Remco Evenepoel ended up in a descent over the guardrail today. The 21-year-old Belgian suffered from a swollen elbow, but still finished the stage.

An investigation showed that he had not broken anything. Evenepoel suffered a lot of scrapes and bruises, including at the level of his kneecap and the second metacarpal of his left hand.

“The medical team has decided that it is best for Remco to leave the race. This way he can fully recover as soon as possible before working towards his next goals this season,” Deceuninck-Quick Step reports.

It was impossible to prevent that fall

Evenepoel himself is disappointed that he has to give up the fight. “It was a fall that shouldn’t have happened,” he says.

“I don’t know what exactly happened in front of me. But I came into the corner and saw some guys lying on the ground. I couldn’t pass them because a rider was riding next to me. It was impossible to avoid the fall. “

“I have not broken anything, but I do have a lot of bruises. It makes no sense to continue driving with pain. I am now returning to Belgium to have CT scans.”

Evenepoel: “Return to the Giro one day”

Evenepoel would have liked to drive to Milan. “Of course it is a shame that I have to leave my first big round too soon.”

“In the end it was a great experience. I hope to return to the Giro one day. I wish all my team mates the best for the remaining stages.”

Evenepoel was still 2nd in the Giro after 10 stages. But after a blow in the trip over the gravel roads and a hammer blow of 24 minutes on Monday, he had dropped to 19th place. After the fall today, he was 27th.
