JACKSONVILLE, Fla – Tim Tebow and Urban Meyer will officially meet, this time in the NFL.
The former University of Florida star quarterback and 2007 Heisman Trophy winner struck a deal with the Jacksonville Jaguars on Thursday, which means he will play for his former college coach again.
Last week the network NFL Network had mentioned that the pact “could be official within a week or so.” It’s now done.
However, his role will be different this time around.
Tebow will join the Jags as a tight end. He changed positions after announcing his retirement from Major League Baseball in February. He got a tryout with the North Florida team a week later.
“I know it will be a challenge, but it’s a challenge that I want to take on,” Tebow said in a statement issued by the team. I am ready to follow the directions of the coaching staff and listen to the advice of my teammates. I appreciate everyone’s support as I tackle a new adventure. “
Tebow, 33, will return to the field with his new team on Thursday for an optional practice session, which will take place behind closed doors. He shouldn’t be meeting with the media before training camp, at the earliest, in the hopes of limiting the media circus he’s caused wherever he’s been in the NFL.
His comeback is one of a kind due to his age, new position, and the fact that he hasn’t played a regular season game in the NFL since 2012, with the New York Jets.
Several teams had suggested he switch positions over the years, but Tebow had always refused to do so.
The veteran will therefore be back in the NFL, after spending four years (2016-2019) in the organization of the New York Mets. He will play for Meyer for the first time since his last year in college, in 2009.
