News – Nets star Kyrie Irving returns to Boston: “Hopefully there is no racism”

After the Brooklyn Nets took the 2-0 lead in the first round against the Boston Celtics, the series moves to Boston. Kyrie Irving is returning to his old place of work, the point guard hopes that there will be no attacks from the Celtics fans upon reception.

“I’m looking forward to the competition with my teammates and hopefully we can keep it strictly to basketball, hopefully there is no state of war or racism,” said Irving when asked about his return to Boston, where he played from 2017 to 2019.

“People are yelling shit from the stands all the time, but even if they do, it’s part of the game and we’ll just focus on what we can control,” the 29-year-old continued.

When asked if he had ever had to listen to racist comments at the TD Garden in Boston, he replied, “I’m not the only one who can confirm that.” In the past there have been several racist insults against black athletes in Boston, even Celtics legend Bill Russell was a victim of racism. In 2017, baseball star Adam Jones complained of racial slurs during an away game with the Boston Red Sox. “That’s the way it is. The whole world knows it,” said Kyrie of what happened in Boston.

Irving averaged 24.1 points and 6.1 assists in his two years in the Celtics jersey, but in his second season Boston failed in the second playoff round after a 1-4 against Milwaukee. Then he switched to the Nets. Game 3 between the Nets and Celtics will take place on Saturday night (2.30 a.m. German time) DAZN) in Boston statt.
