Jonny Clayton New Premier League Darts Champion | Darts

It is the second really big prize for Clayton that he has won in his career as a ‘single player’. Earlier this year, the Welshman won The Masters, and together with Gerwyn Price, he was already the best in the World Cup of Darts on behalf of Wales.

Clayton, who, like De Sousa, has never been in the final (or even the semi-final) of the Premier League, already settled with Michael van Gerwen earlier in the evening. Clayton led 6-4 against Mighty Mike, 7-6 behind, but squeezed out a great final piece and eventually beat the Dutchman 10-8. With an even smaller difference (10-9), De Sousa was too strong for Nathan Aspinall in the other semi-final battle.

Clayton kept his first three legs and managed to snatch one from De Sousa, which gave him a 4-2 lead. That gap was enough to stay in the lead throughout the game. Via 6-4 and 9-5, the man from Llanelli eventually ran away from De Sousa, who had such a beautiful 120 finish on Thursday evening by throwing tops three times. With an 11-5 victory, Clayton eventually took the title from Glen Durrant, who played no significant role in the competition this year and did not even survive the first selection on ‘Judgment Night’.

“I am not emotional, but I am so very proud”, beamed the tournament winner RTL7. “I have no words for this. Darts is my hobby and achieving this is a dream come true. 2021 is really my year, I can’t be any prouder than now. ”
