Is UEFA now overturning the European away goals rule?

Will the first and second leg in the European Cup soon be viewed independently of the away goals?

It was introduced 56 years ago, in 1965: the away goals rule. Now it apparently wants to abolish UEFA, reports the English newspaper “Times”. The away goals rule applies in the Champions League and Europa League if a tie is reached in knockout matches. The team that then scored more away goals in the two clashes moves on to the next round.

According to the Times, there is an increasing opinion among the management that the rule is “old-fashioned” and should therefore be addressed. A UEFA committee met on Friday as part of the trip to the Champions League final. This meeting had shown that a rule change was necessary and the appropriate steps were now being taken. The executive committee has yet to approve the decision.

Even neutral venues during the corona pandemic are said to have triggered this thought process again among those responsible. The rule was felt more and more to be “unnecessary”.
