Fifa bribery scandal: Bank Julius Baer pays million fines in USA

Dhe Swiss bank Julius Baer has to pay a fine of 79 million US dollars (65 million euros) for being involved in a corruption scandal involving the world football association Fifa in the USA. The US Department of Justice said the bank had admitted to having participated in the money laundering for bribes for football officials amounting to $ 36 million. The money laundering had fueled the bribery scandal in “international football”, in which marketing companies paid the officials in return for broadcast rights, it said.

The bank and its employees allowed bribes, while internal supervision turned a blind eye despite clear warning signs of money laundering, as the responsible prosecutor Mark Lesko of the eastern borough of New York said.

After the first arrests of officials shortly before the re-election of the then world association president Joseph Blatter in May 2015, there were charges against more than 40 people. Fifa had always emphasized that it had the status of a victim in US criminal proceedings and that FIFA officials were in regular contact with the US Department of Justice.
