Few red cards, many penalties – the World Cup in numbers

The World Cup is over, all the games have been played: Time for a small balance sheet. The tournament in Russia can be squeezed into numbers. Goals, cards, possession: some statistics on the World Cup.

1 use

FIFA sent the German referee Felix Brych home before the quarter-finals with just one preliminary round. A missed penalty for Serbia against Switzerland was probably fatal for Munich. A tournament for a German referee had not ended so early since 1982. The Argentine Nestor Pitana was allowed to lead the duel between France and Croatia in Moscow after the opening game.

4 referrals

There were four red or yellow-red cards. Jérôme Boateng and the Russian Igor Smolnikow saw yellow-red, Michael Lang from Switzerland and the Colombian Carlos Sánchez had to leave the field with red. That is the lowest value since 1978.

9 Tore

The English scored nine of their twelve goals from set pieces. World Cup record.

10 goalscorers

As the tenth Belgian goalscorer, Thomas Meunier scored the 1-0 win over England in the game for third place. So many different players have only met for Italy in 2006 and France in 1982.

19 hits

Goals came in stoppage time in the second half. Seven more than at the entire 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

20th place

As world number 20. Croatia was the lowest ranking World Cup finalist since the table was introduced in late 1992.

29 Strafstöße

So many penalties were whistled. The previous record of 18 from the 2002, 1998 and 1990 World Championships has thus been pulverized. Seven shooters failed with their penalty kick.

30 incidents

The anti-discrimination network Fare counted more than 30 incidents of sexual harassment by fans at the World Cup in Russia. According to his information, the number of unreported cases is likely to be ten times as high.

72 percent

This is how much possession the German team had on average in their three games. It didn’t help – after the preliminary round, the World Cup had never been over for a DFB selection.

99.32 percent

Almost exclusively correct referee decisions were made in disputed decisions until after the semifinals – at least according to FIFA assessment. The video assistants had increased this rate by 95.73 percent, and the video evidence was officially used 19 times. Apparently this was the case more often, a list was not available from the world association when asked.

169 Tore

This is how many goals were celebrated by Russia in 64 World Cup games. The average of 2.64 per game is just below the value of the 2014 tournament (2.67). In the ranking of all world championships this is only enough for 15th place out of 21st.

47,371 spectators

That’s how many people came to the stadiums per game. Also because of lower capacities, this is significantly less than at the World Cup four years ago in Brazil (53 592). The last time the average was lower was in Japan and South Korea in 2002.

857.000 Franken

The world association FIFA received this sum in total in disciplinary penalties. Of this, 360,000 francs was spent on wearing non-compliant under-socks alone.
