Cuban pitcher Vladimir Gutiérrez will make his Major League debut

The Cuban pitcher Vladimir Gutierrez received the call of the Reds of Cincinnati to debut in the majors in the next days.

This was reported by the Cuban sports journalist specialized in baseball, Francys Romero, who pointed out that the right-hander will be the 221st Antillean to reach the MLB.

Vladimir Gutiérrez was seeing action with the Louisville team at Triple-A where he was 2-0 with a 2.65 ERA. In that sense, Romero explained that the player born in Pinar del Río is one of the Reds’ most prominent prospects.

In 2020, Baseball America magazine chose the Cuban as the pitcher with the best curve and change in the pitching system of the Cincinnati Reds.

“He is the second Cuban to make his debut in 2021. Gutiérrez is expected to join the team this Thursday and receive the opportunity as a starter on Friday against the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley Field.”

Romero said in a Facebook post.

Importantly, the Reds will need a starter to step in on Friday to fill the spot left vacant in the rotation by Wade Miley’s absence, as he is currently on the 10-day disabled list.

Vladimir Gutierrez had three Triple-A starts with Louisville this season. He pitched 17.0 innings and allowed nine hits, three home runs, to accompany seven walks and struck out 21 of the 67 batters he faced.
