Covering the impact of the coronavirus on the world of sport

New York Knicks fans have waited a long time to see their team return to the playoffs and fans at Madison Square Garden on Sunday night were treated to an extremely competitive and entertaining competition against the Atlanta Hawks. After going back and forth for most of the second half, it was the Hawks who ultimately came out on top with a 107-105 win in Game 1.

While the usual suspects proved important to the Hawks, Trae Young led all scorers with 32 points while Bogdan Bogdanovich scored 18, the Knicks received an outstanding performance from a surprising member of their roster as Alec Burks paced the New York offense with 27 points off the bench, including 18 in the fourth quarter alone. Ultimately, however, Burks and the Knicks didn’t have enough firepower to keep pace with Young’s Hawks as the All-Star guard silenced the chants of the Garden faithful with a winning float with a bit. less than a second to play in regulation.

There, two teams will meet again Wednesday night in the second game of their best of seven series. The opening council is scheduled for 7:30 pm. AND with TNT managing the broadcast.

Trae Young finally got his first look at the playoffs on Sunday night, but if you didn’t know anything about his career you would have assumed he was a 10-year veteran. He racked up 32 points, seven rebounds and 10 assists, and hit the winning float with 0.9 seconds left.

From the game’s first possessions, it was clear the Knicks were going to have a problem keeping Young out of the way. Time and time again he used his quickness to rush down the lane and wreak havoc, both with his scores and his game, and it was no surprise that he scored the winner of the match with the same method. .

The Knicks actually tried to send him two players to get the ball out of his hands, but Young managed to get around Frank Ntilikina and drop a float over the defense.

With his big night out, Young became the fourth player in NBA history to record 30 points and 10 assists in their playoff debut, joining the elite company of Derrick Rose, LeBron James and Chris Paul. And while it would have been impressive in any setting, the fact that he did it at Madison Square Garden makes it even more special.

“When you’re in the zone and everyone says F you… it got really quiet at the end,” Young said. “For me, I wanted to hear those F chants again. “

Julius Randle has been great for the Knicks this season, having played the best basketball of his career to bring them back to the playoffs for the first time since 2013. In particular, he destroyed the Hawks, with an average of 37, 3 points per game in regular season meetings.

Unfortunately for him and the Knicks, their first playoff game didn’t turn out the same. Randle couldn’t get anything offensively and finished with 15 points, 12 rebounds and four assists on a sad 6-for-23 on the field. He’s only had nine games all season with fewer points and three games with a lower shooting percentage.

The fact that Randle has struggled so much and the Knicks still have a chance to win almost makes the loss more frustrating from their perspective. You have to assume he will play better in the future, and if they could have stolen the first game without him at his best, that would have bode well for their chances.

We’ve already covered how poor Randle is, and RJ Barrett isn’t much better, with 14 points and 11 of 6 of 15 rebounds on the court. With their top two players combining for 30 points on 12 of 38 shots, it was a wonder the Knicks were still in the game down the home stretch.

The reason they had a chance to win is because Alec Burks, Derrick Rose and the whole bench have stepped up in a major way. Burks lost 18 points in the fourth quarter just en route to a new career playoff high of 27, while Rose had 17 points, five rebounds and five assists. All told, the Knicks bench more than doubled its Hawks counterparts, 64-31.

In truth, it’s hard to imagine the Knicks bench having a better game in any playoff, but if they can get a constant offensive boost from Burks and Rose, it’ll go a long way as they try. to fight after an early deficit.
