Very beautiful stories emerge around sports. And one of them is the one that stars in the ‘dalecandELA’ boat skippered by the Portuguese Marta Ramada Leite, along with Amparo Moya, Rita Hernández, María Cristina González and Susana Baena, from the Galician Monte Real Club de Yates de Bayona. What they try, in addition to competing and trying to win the ‘II International Women’s Sailing Cup’ that is held this weekend in Aguas del Abra, is to make women’s sport visible and support those who suffer from ALS disease. One of them is Jaime Lafita, who came to the docks of the Real Club Marítimo del Abra-Real Sporting Club to greet this crew. Jaime Lafita, in 2016, was diagnosed with this disease. As a result of this fact, a group of friends, family and people affected by ALS decided to create the non-profit association “dalencandELA” with the aim of raising funds for research, being with those who suffer from it and giving visibility to the disease , since there is still a long way to go to overcome it.

Among the many activities that “dalecandELA” organizes throughout the year, on June 21 Jaime Lafita will present in Brussels before the European Parliament and other community institutions a joint manifesto with associations from other European countries, requesting greater investment in research, homologation of medicines and better treatment of the patient. To travel from Getxo to Brussels, Jaime Lafita will do so in “non-motorized” environments with the aim of drawing attention to the damage that this disease generates in motor neurons and demonstrating that it is still possible to live, enjoy and achieve great challenges. The trip will take place in several stages. The first “maritime” stage, departing on June 11, will be on board a sailing boat to the port of La Rochelle in France, and the following “land” by bicycle to Brussels. Before that, the crew of the ‘dalecanELA’ will be noticed in this ‘II International Women’s Sailing Cup’.
