Spain:Loyalty bonus for Messi
Lionel Messi can apparently look forward to a loyalty bonus of 38,964,977.50 euros at FC Barcelona on July 15th. This reports the daily newspaper The sports world. Interestingly, the 33-year-old Argentine’s contract, who has played for the Catalans since 2003 and thus as a youth, expires on June 30 this year. It was only on Sunday that the Gazette caused a stir in Spain with the unveiling of the Messi’s salary at Barça for four seasons (2017 to 2021) in the amount of 555 237 619 euros. That would mean a good 138 million euros a year for the South American. Messi has already received 92 percent of the total, i.e. just under 511 million euros.
Barcelona announced legal action against the newspaper on Sunday. Apparently, these are numbers from the original Barça contracts with the six-time world footballer. “What comes out is supposed to harm him,” said coach Ronald Koeman after FC Barcelona’s 2-1 win against Bilbao: “Messi deserves respect. He has done so much for Spanish football.” Messi scored the 1-0 (21st) in his 650th competitive game for Barça.
