PGA: Controversial or not, Patrick Reed has the last word in Torrey Pines (Carlo Blanchard)

Monday, 1 Feb 2021. 11:37

The American Patrick Reed has finally put his hand on a 9e career title by handily winning the Open Farmers Insurance Open which ended on Sunday, on the challenging Torrey Pines South Course, located in the San Diego area.

The one nicknamed Captain America after his Ryder Cup prowess ignored thick and thin to finally bring back a last card of 68, which allowed him to outstrip his closest pursuers by a margin of 5 strokes. . In the end, it was Reed’s little play that got him the win, as there were a lot of rescues, especially on the second nine.

No less than 5 players shared the 2e position, namely Tony Finau, Viktor Hovland, Henryk Norlander, Ryan Palmer and Xander Sc Chaudele. The biggest loser is arguably Viktor Hovland, as he was one shot away from Reed before he bugged the 14e, 15e and 17e holes. He even missed a putt of less than 2 feet on the 17e which, in the end, cost him the exclusivity of the 2e square. The little odd robbed him of $ 261,000 and valuable points in the FedEx Cup standings.

Controversy in the Saturday round

The eventual champion once again found himself in an embarrassing situation in the 3e round. He claimed his bullet was buried in his own hole in the long grass to the left of 10e green as the televised replay made it clear that his ball had rebounded after it hit the ground. The referee ruled in his favor and Reed was entitled to relief which subsequently ignited social networks.

It should be mentioned that Reed is not at his first controversy, as he has already been penalized for moving sand behind his ball during the Hero tournament, thus improving his position, which is against the rules. Either way, he dominated all the competitors and still deserves the victory, but this incident leaves a bitter taste in the mouths of many.

Torrey Pines’ south course, which stretches for over 7,800 yards, gave all players a hard time, especially on the 2e new. The degree of difficulty is so high that the show suffers. Opportunities for birdies are rare and players must constantly fight to try to save the pars.

The absence of spectators is also felt, because the atmosphere is non-existent. Hopefully the situation will change over the next few months because it would be a shame to play the United States Open under such conditions next June.

Next step: the Open Waste Management

The players meet in Phoenix, Arizona this week for the Waste Management Open. This tournament usually draws the biggest crowds of the season with peaks of over 200,000 spectators in a single day. The crazy atmosphere that reigns on the famous 16e hole, a par 3 on which nearly 20,000 people are crowded, will not be there this week because only 5,000 spectators will cross the turnstiles for each of the 4 rounds.

Aside from defending champion Webb Simpson, several seeds will be there. Among those who confirmed their attendance were Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm, Brooks Koepka, Hideki Matsuyama, Justin Thomas, Xander Sc Chaudele, Rickie Fowler, Carlos Ortiz, Matthew Wolff, Jason Day, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth as well as Canadiens Adam Hadwin and Corey Conners.

You can follow the progress of the 3e and 4e rounds of this omnium Saturday and Sunday, from 3 p.m., on the airwaves of RDS.
