In recent days, video game companies around the world released their financial reports for the last quarter or the entire year. Konami was one of them and in the information it can be seen that it did not have its best year, since its profits were down, but, on the contrary, the video games division shone.

The Japanese company just shared its latest financial report (via GamesIndustry.biz), corresponding to the third quarter of the fiscal year, which ended in December 2020. The report mentions that earnings reached ¥ 191.9 billion yen (about $ 1.8 MMDD), that is, they fell only 0.6% compared to the previous year. However, it is striking that almost all of the company’s divisions posted significant losses.

Konami’s attractions business profits fell 31.7%, while the games and systems division also declined (48.8%), as did its sports business (43.9%).

Momotaro Dentetsu and mobile games boosted Konami’s earnings

However, it was not all bad news for Konami, as the digital entertainment division grew 33.1% compared to the same period last year, reaching ¥ 144.6 billion yen in profit (approximately $ 1.3 MMDD), something that stands out if we take note that all divisions posted downward gains.

This should not surprise many, since, as happened with other companies, the health contingency measures derived from the pandemic increased spending on video games, especially digital ones. Precisely, mobile games were key to the good performance of this Konami division, such as Professional Baseball Spirits A Y eFootball Winning Eleven 2021.

Console games were not far behind. As we have been telling you in the latest weekly sales reports from Japan, one of the titles that has caught the attention of the Japanese is Momotaro Dentetsu: Showa, Heisei, Reiwa mo Teiban!, whose performance Konami stood out in the report, since in less than 2 months it already distributed 2.5 million units, so far it is the best-selling game of 2020 in the region and has not even left the first place on the list in any week since its premiere .

In case you missed it: Konami was developing a game for the Nintendo Switch, but canceled it.

Although Konami is well known in Japan for its attractions and pachinko machines business in Japan, you should know that it is still active in developing games not only for mobile phones. To increase its presence in the West, a few months ago it not only distributed Skeletal attack, a new title for consoles, but also launched an initiative to publish more games in this region and diversify its portfolio at the same time.
