“Illegal and even dangerous”: supporter groups are massively opposed to European Super League | Foreign Football

Foreign footballNearly 140 European supporter groups have expressed their dislike for the project of a European Superliga in a joint communication. A similar competition is “illegal and even dangerous”, they say.

For years it has been buzzing with rumors about the creation of a new European Superliga. The new (closed) competition would be diametrically opposed to the Champions League and Europa League. Various media reported in more concrete terms in the past period that plans are on the table to create a competition with the eighteen best teams from the most important European competitions. Play-offs would be played at the end of the season, following the example of the Final 8 at the end of the Champions League last summer.

“The Superliga will destroy the European sports model, which is based on generally accepted principles such as promotion and relegation,” said a statement from supporter groups from 16 European countries. “The project will also undermine the economic foundations of European football. A dozen elite clubs will only become richer and more powerful. That will lead to more inequality and less sporting competitiveness. The Superliga is not sustainable in the long run.”

National leagues and cup tournaments must be protected and revenues more fairly distributed. A Superliga (…) goes against the spirit of the game

The fans, on the other hand, argue for more equality between the European competitions. “The national leagues and cup tournaments need to be protected and the income distributed more fairly. A Superliga is illegal, can become dangerous and goes against the spirit of the game. ”

The communication is based on the Football Supporters Europe (FSE) network. The Belgian organization Belgian Supporters, among others, signed the text.
