Alizé Cornet perfectly negotiated his entry into contention in this Melbourne Gippsland Trophy with Ajla Tomljanovic. Elina Svitolina also won against Andrea Petkovic. However, it is already over for Chloé Paquet.

Alizé Cornet started well. The French, 53rd player in the world, disposed of the Australian Ajla Tomljanovic, 69th player in the world, in three sets (5-7, 6-1, 6-3) and 2:29 hours of play. In the first round of the WTA 500 tournament in Gippsland Trophy, played in Melbourne, Australia, on a hard outdoor. However, everything had not started so well for the Habs, who dropped the first round (5-7), after giving up two face-offs and despite a break. In the last two sets, Alizé Cornet delivered a whole different face. Indeed, in the second round, the higher ranked of the two stole the first two face-offs from her opponent to lead 5-0. If the Australian was able to win her last service, the damage was already done and her opponent just had to conclude (6-1). Finally, in the third and final round, Cornet broke his opponent two more times. A first break intervened from the start, then a second during the last game (6-3). In the next round, the task will certainly be tougher for the Frenchwoman, who will rub shoulders with the Japanese Naomi Osaka, 3rd player in the world.

Quiet Svitolina

Exempted from the first round, in her capacity as seeded n ° 3, the Ukrainian Elina Svitolina, 5th player in the world, perfectly negotiated her entry into the tournament. In just 1h14 of play, she easily disposed of the German Andrea Petkovic, 102nd player in the world, in two short innings (6-1, 6-4). However, the two players fought a real fight, in the first game. But despite six break points in her favor, the German finally gave in. If then, she managed to tie (1-1), she lost the last six games and this set (1-6). In the second and final set, the two players tied for the first four games. Then, in the next five, it was only a succession of breaks, but the last word therefore went to the higher ranked of the two, which was imposed on his service (4-6). The Czech Karolina Muchova, 27th player in the world and seeded No. 8, also easily qualified against the American Caty McNally, 122nd player in the world (6-1, 6-1). On the other hand, it is already over for the Chinese Qiang Wang, 34th player in the world and seeded No. 10, beaten by the Italian Jasmine Paolini, 97th player in the world (3-6, 7-5, 6-4).

Package does not pass the cut

A little tour and then off to Paquet. The Frenchwoman, 187th player in the world, was beaten by Australian Destanee Aiava, 215th player in the world, in three sets (6-1, 4-6, 6-4) and 2:22 hours of play. Led quickly 4-0 in the first round, the Frenchwoman won her service game, before losing a third and the set (6-1), despite four break points in his favor throughout this round. Paquet had a burst of pride, winning the second round, thanks to a break at 1-1 and at the end of his sixth set point, in two games (4-6). But in the end, the higher ranked of the two was unable to continue. In the third set, the two players then tied the game in the first six games. On the last two face-offs of her opponent, the French obtained five break points, before giving up her service, on the Australian’s fifth match point (6-4). It goes for the Latvian Jelena Ostapenko, 45th player in the world and seed n ° 13, the American Cori Gauff, 48th player in the world and seed n ° 14 and for the German Laura Siegemund, 51st player in the world and seed n ° 16.
