Champions League 2024: this is the new format they propose to seduce the powerful | Champions League

FIFA and UEFA came to a halt on the idea of a Super League, promoted by Real Madrid to give more guarantees – read silver – to the most powerful teams in Europe. But they are not stupid, they know that there are fair demands and that is why they have set to work to convince them to stay and play a Champions League that makes them happier … and profitable.

According to ‘RMC Sport’, UEFA has presented a project to reform the tournament that would change the Champions League from 2024.

The idea would be to expand the competition from 32 teams to 36 clubs, divided into six groups of 6 competitors and implement a support system for historical teams.

The idea is to increase the number of classified clubs to 6 for each league, as long as the Europa League champion plays in that league or the “historic” clubs do not qualify.

I mean, classify all the big teams yes or yes? You are right. One of the complaints of the current format is that it is too democratic and opens quotas to very small teams, even if they are national champions, and takes away the option of those who have not only more fans but also generate more ratings. This is what is called in the project “protection of historic”.

With this new format, UEFA seeks to expand the number of matches to be played to reach the elimination phase, which means that there will be more games on TV and, consequently, more money. Consequently, there would be 10 matches for each club.

What comes next is the political work of putting all the federations in agreement to find available dates, reduce the qualifying rounds or make the teams that play European competitions start the Cup tournament in more advanced rounds, as happens, for example, in a Club World Cup.

The reality is that in the post-pandemic days many think that it would be reasonable to reduce the number of teams in each national league from 20 to 18 teams, as in France or Germany. But that will have to be resolved internally and without going over anyone, which is not entirely guaranteed.
