Canal + recovers TV rights to French football until the end of the season

White smoke ! The Professional Football League announced Thursday evening in a press release that it has finally found a broadcaster for Ligue 1 and Ligue 2. And it is Canal +, the No. 1 suspect since the failure of Mediapro last fall, which is taking over setting. The Vivendi subsidiary and the LFP have reached an agreement, but it only concerns this 2020-2021 season. Canal + will broadcast the entire Ligue 1 and eight Ligue 2 matches, from the 25th day (February 14) until the end of the season. The last two Ligue 2 matches remain broadcast on BeIn Sports. A new call for tenders should therefore take place this summer for the following seasons. The boss of Canal +, Maxime Saada, hastened to announce the news on Twitter.

After an unsuccessful call for tenders on Monday, the LFP could negotiate over-the-counter with any broadcaster. It therefore did not choose Amazon, the DAZN streaming platform or the Discovery group (Eurosport), which presented offers, insufficient, but which remained in the race. The League has instead found a compromise between its pressing need for income, and Canal + ‘s desire to put everything back together.

According to RMC and AFP, Canal would have undertaken to pay lot 3 (which he wanted to sell off) until the end, that is to say three remaining drafts of 56 million euros each, and decided to extend 35 million euros. additional euros. In all, it would therefore be 200 million euros that would return to the clubs for this end of the season. In total, TV rights would reach 750 million euros for the 2020-2021 season, a loss of 500 million euros compared to what was expected with Mediapro. Moreover, RMC affirms that Canal + does not withdraw its complaints before the Competition Authority and the Paris Commercial Court. The soap opera may not be quite finished.
