Bosz after Leverkusen’s failure in DFB-Pokal: ‘This should never have happened’ | NOW

Peter Bosz is terribly disappointed by Bayer Leverkusen’s disgrace on Tuesday in the eighth finals of the DFB-Pokal. The Dutch trainer saw his team lose 2-1 after extension at Rot-Weiss Essen, which plays at the fourth level.

“I am angry and disappointed,” said Bosz with a grim face. “With all our experience this should never have happened. It was not the field, not the rain and not the opponent, it was up to us. Rot-Weiss has deservedly won.”

Leverkusen had a hard time against the number two of the Regionalliga West and after ninety minutes it was still 0-0. In the 104th minute, Bosz’s team finally took the lead thanks to Leon Bailey, but the number five of the Bundesliga then thought that he was a little too early for a place in the last eight.

“We have missed too many opportunities. We have had that problem for a while”, Bosz referred to the recent defeats against VfL Wolfsburg (0-1) and RB Leipzig (1-0).

‘This was just really bad’

The loss against Essen is the most painful chapter in Leverkusen’s bad series. Via Oguzhan Kefkir, Rot-Weiss came back to 1-1 and Simon Engelmann completed the sensation a minute before the end of extra time. The 31-year-old attacker surprised by shooting from a difficult angle.

“After our goal, we should never have let it go again”, Bosz realized. “Our position play was insufficient, we had no rest on the ball and failed to score the second goal from the counter. No, this was just very bad.”

Last season Bosz reached the cup final with Leverkusen, which then lost 4-2 to Bayern Munich in the final battle. In his third season at the German club, he seems to be able to win a prize only in Europe. Leverkusen plays this month in the sixteenth finals of the Europa League against Young Boys.
