Roland Garros is being played at a different time of year, due to the hiatus in international sport due to the coronavirus pandemic, but that does not take away the fact that Rafael Nadal remains the big favorite for the title on the courts Parisians.

The tennis player born in Palma de Mallorca won his first two matches without major problems, and says that at 34 he remains “the beast on clay”.

With the second round triumph over American Mackenzie McDonald with a final score of 6-1 6-0 6-3, Nadal set his record at 95 Grand Slam victories and 2 losses in Paris. A mark that confirms that we are in the presence of the best player who has been seen on the surface of the brick dust.

It is an undeniable reality that the generation led by Dominic Thiem trampled the main courts of the world, and an example of this was the Austrian’s triumph at the US Open. But there is still no player who could be a real threat to Nadal at Roland Garros, beyond what Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer can do (out this year due to injury).

The Paris tournament demands a lot of physical stamina and claw which Nadal has to spare, coupled with his aggressive way of hitting the ball with a type of spin that causes problems for any opponent. So, despite the physical problems that are natural for a man who is already in the home stretch of his career, the current world number two should not have major problems to win another Grand Slam title in France.

Before starting the 2020 edition of Roland Garros, Nadal succumbed in Rome with the Argentinian Diego Schwartzman in the quarter-finals in Rome. But it’s important to note that the Spaniard was back on the courts after a long absence, so it’s not a real thermometer that serves to place him as a vulnerable player this year.

Rafael Nadal has a total of 12 Roland Garros titles in his windows, and his level displayed in the first two rounds indicates that he is still the king of the tournament, despite being played under a temperature lower than the normal.

Novak Djokovic, Dominic Thiem and Diego Schwartzman could surprise in the great French event, but the odds are very slim against a Nadal who is simply unstoppable on the courts of one of the four most important tournaments in the world of tennis.
