Vertonghen tests positive for corona, heavy fight between Porto and Sporting | Primeira Liga

The Final Four of the Portuguese League Cup threatens to turn into chaos and a heavy dispute. This is due to 19 corona cases at Benfica and two at Sporting. Red Devil Jan Vertonghen is one of the players who became infected. His club confirms that.

Benfica announced seventeen new corona cases on Tuesday within his team and technical staff. Vertonghen, Gilberto, Grimaldo, Diogo Gonçalves and Waldschmidt are the 5 players who tested positive.

The club said it was waiting for the recommendations of the Ministry of Health on possible participation in competitions in the next two weeks.

Benfica should face Sporting Braga in the semi-finals of the Portuguese League Cup on Wednesday evening, which has no corona infections in its ranks.

Its in the butter between Porto and Sporting

Tonight (Tuesday) Porto and Sporting normally face each other in the other semi-final, but there is a serious hair in the butter between the two clubs. Porto accused Sporting in a press release of “an attack on public health”.

According to Porto, Sporting wants two players, who previously passed a positive test for COVID-19, to play again four days earlier than expected. The reigning champion said that she “will re-evaluate her participation in the Portuguese League Cup if the competent authorities do not impose a ten-day quarantine period on Sporting players, as provided for in the Portuguese Corona Protocol”.

Sporting, meanwhile, accused Porto of putting “unacceptable pressure” on it. Braga has also criticized Sporting by saying that the club is asking for preferential treatment.
