Toluca rescues tie against Chivas and is leader in Mexico | sports

MEXICO CITY (AP) – With a goal from Kevin Castañeda, Toluca salvaged a 1-1 draw with Chivas on Saturday to provisionally climb to first place in the Mexican Clausura tournament after two rounds.

Jesús Molina put Guadalajara in front with a header at 23, but Castañeda leveled a minute later with a shot from mid-range.

The Red Devils, led by Argentine Hernán Cristante, reached four points and were left alone at the top, waiting for the other results of the date.

Cristante returned this tournament to the bench of Toluca, which seeks to return to the forefront and has not been crowned since the Clausura 2010 tournament.

The Guadalajara of Víctor Manuel Vucetich accumulated its second consecutive draw and with its two points it placed in eighth position, also provisionally.

Chivas generated the first dangerous opportunity in the 22nd minute with a header from César Huerta, which was deflected to a corner kick by goalkeeper Luis García. On the next play, Alexis Vega took a corner on the left and sent a cross to the heart of the area, where Molina took advantage of the bad marking of the visitors’ defense and headed for 1-0.

Toluca’s response was almost immediate. Castañeda took advantage of a rebound on the outskirts of the area and connected a low shot that went into the base of the right post of the goal defended by Raúl Gudiño, who remained static.

In the second half, Chivas generated the first danger on the door at 56 minutes, with an attempt by Christian Calderón that was contained with some difficulties by García.

After that, Guadalajara did not shoot on goal again until 77 when Uriel Antuna reached the baseline and sent a delayed ball for Miguel Ponce, who sent a left-footed shot that went over the goal.
