Australian Open qualification
Tennis professional receives positive corona test result in the middle of the match
During the qualification for the first Grand Slam tournament of the year, the Australian Open, a bizarre incident occurred: US professional Denis Kudla found out before the last service game of his game that he had tested positive for Covid-19.
It is a logistical challenge to hold a major sporting event in times of pandemic. For example, the organizers and participants of the Handball World Cup, which starts tomorrow in Egypt, can tell a thing or two about it. But the processes surrounding the first Grand Slam tournament of the tennis year, the Australian Open, cannot be compared with previous years.
For example, due to the strict restrictions in Melbourne, the qualifying round will not take place on site, but in Doha, Qatar, and there, despite all safety precautions, a curious incident occurred: US professional Denis Kudla was informed of his positive corona test during his game against Elliot Benchetrit.
After the victory in the quarantine hotel
Kudla was about to serve to win the match when he found out about it while changing sides. Then he did his service and won the game 6: 4, 6: 3 – but this success did not mean making it into the penultimate round of the qualifying, because Kudla then had to go to the quarantine hotel immediately. Spicy: If he had lost the service game, the match would have been abandoned and Benchetrit would have been declared the winner.
In addition to Kudla, Francisco Cerundolo also tested positive – however, he was informed of this before he could play his match against Mario Vilella Martinez from Spain. The Australian Open is set to begin in Melbourne on February 8 – three weeks later than originally planned.
