Telenet launches free sports channel – De Standaard

Telenet gets a series of sports matches from behind the paywall. The telecom company will launch the ‘Play Sports Open’ channel on 2 February, on which the customer will be able to watch a selection of football, basketball, hockey, cyclocross and F1 matches for free, supplemented with side programs.

The free channel will show football matches from the Europa League, the Premier League and the Eredivisie, as well as tennis (ATP and WTA), Belgian hockey and basketball, cyclocross, Formula 1 and motocross (MXGP).

In addition, Telenet promises, among other things, talk shows, a new edition of ‘The Container Cup’ (for U21), a European Championship quiz and documentaries about life behind the scenes at the football clubs RSC Anderlecht and Royal Antwerp FC.

With the new channel, Telenet says it is aiming at the occasional sports fan. Those who follow sports more fanatically will have to rely on the paying package ‘Play Sports’. Belgian football also remains behind the paywall, just like the German, Italian and Spanish football league.

Telenet customers will be able to see ‘Play Sports Open’ on channel 11, the current info channel. The channel will air on February 2 at 6 p.m.
