PLAY THE GHOST REGATTAS AGAINST AMERICAN MAGIC

JAMES SPITHILL: “SURPRISED BY THE FAILURE TO PENALIZE INEOS”

6.12 Thanks for joining us and enjoy the day. A sporting greeting.

6.11 To understand if tomorrow Luna Rossa and Ineos will return to the water for a irrelevant regatta. We will let you know in the next few hours.

6.11 The ranking after the penultimate day of the round robin.

PRADA CUP RATINGS

  1. Ineos Team UK 6 punti
  2. Red Moon 3
  3. American Magic 0

6.10 The Luna Rossa regatta also ended immediately after the start. Nothing changes: the Italians will have to play the semifinal against American Magic from January 29th. It will be very hard, because the Americans, traditionally, know how to rise with arrogance from difficulties.

6.08 Starting phase for Luna Rossa in the phantom regatta in the presence of the Americans.

6.06 Now the farce will be up to Luna Rossa.

6.05 After the start, the start of Ineos against American Magic is immediately canceled.

6.00 Now the ghost race of Ineos against American Magic has begun. After the departure it will be interrupted. It is a formal act to attribute the sixth point to the British.

5.54 Now the ghost races against American Magic should be held.

5.53 During the day we will know if tomorrow’s regatta between Luna Rossa and Ineos, now irrelevant, will take place.

5.50 Luna Rossa will return to the water on January 29th to face American Magic. The semifinal will be the best of 7 races: 4 will have to be won to reach Ineos in the final.

5.48 With 5 out of 5 victories, Ineos UK mathematically won the Prada Cup round robin, qualifying for the final which will take place from 13 to 22 February.

5.47 Luna Rossa will now have to play the Prada Cup semifinal against American Magic starting January 29th.

5.46 The protest of Luna Rossa is not accepted. Confirmed result.

5.45 Luna Rossa crosses the finish line with a 33 ″ delay. There is a protest from the Italian team.

5.44 Luna Rossa tried a last desperate intersection, but there was nothing to do.

5.44 Ineos wins and goes to the Prada Cup final.

5.43 100 meters ahead for Ineos, downwind is scary.

5.41 Ineos and Luna Rossa arrive paired at the last gate! A second advantage for the British, who however choose the left side in the last stern and are faster.

5.40 Regatta almost compromised unfortunately for Luna Rossa.

5.38 There is the overtaking of Ineos. What a show of strength of the British.

5.37 Ineos is scary, he is flying on the left side.

5.36 At the fourth gate Luna Rossa maintains only 10 ″ of advantage. Now the third upwind leg will be decisive.

5.35 Luna Rossa turns, but Ineos has almost filled the gap. Downwind the British are much faster.

5.34 Ineos is scary in the stern, he is recovering. Luna Rossa’s lead dropped to just 190 meters.

5.33 Very great second windward of Luna Rossa. Now you have to stay on the bell on this aft side.

5.32 At the third gate Luna Rossa passes with an advantage of 19 “.

5.32 We are approaching gate 3, therefore halfway through the race.

5.31 Luna Rossa is faster now on the left side. 300 meters ahead.

5.31 Luna Rossa weird in the face of Ineos. Rightly the Italians now mark the British. 185 meters ahead.

5.30 The boats are very far apart in this phase. Luna Rossa has 140 meters ahead. It’s a crazy regatta.

5.29 SECOND BOLINA AND OVERPASS OF THE RED MOON! It is in front of the intersection!

5.28 At the second mark Ineos leads with 9 ″ on Luna Rossa. It is very hard.

5.27 Ineos is in front of the intersection. Luna Rossa was wrong to stall.

5.27 The Red Moon also turns, perhaps late.

5.26 Ineos reacts immediately, wacky and veers to the right.

5.26 PASSING OF THE RED MOON IN THE STERN!

5.25 At the first upwind gate, Ineos takes the lead with a 2-second advantage over Luna Rossa. The British made the overtaking. But it’s all open. Now first stern leg.

5.24 Now Ineos turns and finds more wind pressure.

5.24 ALMOST TOUCH THE RED MOON AND INEOS! It’s hand to hand!

5.23 Protest by Luna Rossa, but no sanction by the jury.

5.22 Vira Ineos and Luna Rossa answers immediately. They are marking, the two boats are side by side!

5.21 Ineos turns right first, Luna Rossa responds. The Italian boat went very close to the boundary.

5.20 Luna Rossa starts slightly ahead of the race, good start, but is flanked by Ineos on the right. Delicate position.

5.18 Luna Rossa moves completely to the right, Ineos instead goes towards the bottom of the virtual border.

5.18 Luna Rossa enters the pre-start area.

5.16 Strong wind now, conditions preferred by Ineos. But now it is no longer time for words: Luna Rossa must try to win, whatever the conditions.

5.15 5 minutes to go. Will we really leave? The regatta was originally scheduled for 4.00.

5.13 ENNESIMO 5 minute postponement. Departure postponed to 5.20!

5.12 Even the wind varies between 12 and 20 knots.

5.11 Attention, the wind is getting stronger. An advantage for Ineos, who likes sustained gusts.

5.10 Five minutes to go. Luna Rossa will enter the pre-start on port tack.

5.08 It remains to be seen if Ineos will now have mainsail problems during this regatta. Will the problem have been solved completely? We will find out shortly.

5.07 Eight minutes to go. Will we really leave?

5.04 Ineos accused a problem with the cunningham, a hydraulic system used to shape the mainsail. All solved.

5.03 The problem seems solved. Ben Ainslie’s face already appears more relieved.

5.02 Thirteen minutes to start. Great fibrillation aboard Ineos.

5.00 Work on Ineos continues briskly. The problem could lie with the tree.

4.57 NEW POSTPONEMENT, CRAZY! Ineos has a problem with threading the mainsail. He asked for a 15 minute postponement. Each team could only request a 15-minute postponement once in this round robin.

4.54 Attention, there is a technical problem for Ineos to be defined! Technicians at work, but there are only 5 minutes to go!

4.52 NEW POSTPONEMENT! Just 5 minutes this time. Departure at 5.00. There was a wind shift to the left.

4.51 If the wind remains around 10 knots, for Luna Rossa it is an advantage, because it prefers light winds.

4.50 The tension rises. 5 minutes to the start of Luna Rossa vs Ineos …

4.47 Eight minutes at the start, barring new surprises. The wind seems to have stabilized around 10 knots.

4.41 At the moment the departure is confirmed at 4.55.

4.38 It is a decisive race, rightly the jury is waiting for stable wind conditions. Today gusts between 10 and 20 knots were expected, so we understand how the jumps were probable.

4.37 The regatta should have started at 4.00. So we will have, at least, 55 minutes late.

4.35 Continuous wind shifts, the jury does not feel like starting the race.

4.34 The departure, now set for 4.55, continues to slip. The wind remains unstable.

4.29 NEW POSTPONEMENT! Departure moved to 4.45. There is really great suspense today, the unstable wind is dominating. Be careful because anything can happen.

4.27 Wind less sustained than expected in Auckland. A very delicate match from a tactical point of view is looming.

4.25 Ten minutes to the start of the race! Fundamental pre-start phase: James Spithill and Francesco Bruni will have to be perfect to get the better of Ben Ainslie.

4.19 We remind you that you compete on course C, the one closest to the coast. New Zealanders like it because it allows the public to watch the regatta. It will almost always be used.

4.16 WE ARE THERE! We start at 4.35am! New timetable set.

4.15 Still no news. You need to have patience.

4.10 At the end of today’s race between Luna Rossa and Ineos, both crews will compete in a “ghost race” against American Magic, absent because it is undergoing repairs after last Sunday’s capsize. This is a formal act that will serve to assign the point in the standings. In fact, both ‘ghost races’ will be stopped immediately after the start.

4.09 We recall that Luna Rossa is forced to win to stay in the running for the first place in the round robin which provides direct qualification for the Prada Cup Final. Losing today, tomorrow’s race with Ineos would be irrelevant and the two teams could also decide not to dispute it.

4.08 Now the buoys are being moved.

4.06 Still no decision by the jury. We will have to wait. Everything stopped: remember that the start was postponed due to a wind shift.

4.03 It is likely that the jury will rotate the axis of the race course following the change in wind.

4.00 Now the jury will have to communicate the new departure time.

3.59 Luna Rossa was stretching well on the right, she had laid some very good foundations to start well.

3.58 CLAMOROUS! Late departure! There was a wind shift to the right! All postponed!

3.57 Three minutes to the start, a crucial phase …

3.56 Exactly four minutes to the start of the race! In a couple of minutes Luna Rossa and Britannia will enter the pre-start area!

3.55 This is the formation of Luna Rossa.

3.50 Today’s program will officially open starting at 4 with the highly anticipated Luna Rossa-Ineos match, while Italians and British will follow a ‘ghost’ race against American Magic. The Americans will not take to the water this weekend to repair Patriot for the semifinal.

Great expectations in the Gulf of Hauraki for the next Round Robin regatta between Luna Rossa and Ineos Team UK, fundamental for direct qualification to the final of the event. The Italian team is in fact forced to win the last two matches against the British (the first Saturday, the second Sunday) to grab first place in the group and the consequent pass for the final act of the Challenger Series.

The English team led by Ben Ainslie is still unbeaten in this Prada Cup with four total wins out of as many matches played, while Luna Rossa has a record of 2/2 after beating American Magic twice (absent this weekend to repair Patriot in view of the semifinal). The weather forecasts for the day speak of a medium-strong wind, between 13 and 18 knots on race course C, while tomorrow even more sustained gusts up to 21 knots (maximum limit allowed for racing) are expected. We will see if Max Sirena and his companions will be able to make a step forward even in these conditions, in order to counter a Britannia that has appeared very solid up to now.
