The Glasgow Rangers won the legendary Scottish football derby, known as the “Old Firm” on Saturday afternoon, against Celtic Glasgow just 1-0. Although there were no fans in the stadium due to the CoV, it was once again very turbulent.

Celtic player Nir Bitton received the red card for a foul on Alfredo Morelos after an hour in the match, which had been balanced until then. In the 70th minute, the decisive goal for the Rangers fell through an own goal by Celtics Callum McGregor.

In the hard-fought final phase, in which the guests had good chances to equalize, there were heated scenes and nudges between the players of both teams. With their 14th win in a row, the Rangers, trained by Steven Gerarrd, are now 19 points ahead of the second Celtic. The Rangers have had their best start to the season since 1928, but have also played three more games than defending champion Celtic.

Traditional duel under the sign of remembrance

Exactly 50 years after the Ibrox disaster, in which 66 spectators were killed during a game between the Glasgow Rangers and Celtic Glasgow, both teams had thought of the victims before kick-off. Before the new edition of the “Old Firm” there was a minute’s silence in the Ibrox Stadium.

Commemoration of the disaster 50 years ago

On January 2, 1971, shortly before the end of the derby in what was then Ibrox Park, a crowd of people broke the railing of a barrier, causing a mass panic, as a result of which 66 people died. Even before the game on Saturday, former players, coaches and fans laid wreaths, flowers and scarves at the stadium.
