Refereeing legend Pierluigi Collina would like to see more female referees

Pierluigi Collina, a refereeing referee from 1988 to 2005, defended the presence of women in men’s refereeing. For the Italian, this should not even be discussed.

Pierluigi Collina, this name might ring a bell. The Italian was arguably one of the greatest referees of the time, he who had the gift of calming players down with just one look. Highly respected and still active as chairman of the FIFA referees committee, he today took stock of the presence of women in the refereeing of men’s matches.

Collina reacted to the nomination of Stéphanie Frappart, named for the fourth time as the best referee in the world. The Frenchwoman has already officiated on several occasions for men, in Ligue 1 and in the Champions League. A very good thing according to Pierluigi Collina. “Only the quality counts, the rest not at all. If a referee has qualities, he must be able to exploit them regardless of whether he is a man or a woman”, explained the former referee to the Corriere della Serra.

According to him, this situation should also be repeated in the future. “I wish this would be considered normal. I hope that in the future there will be more Frapparts and that it is no longer something considered strange or new.”, hammered Collina.

Obviously encouraging words for all women wishing to become a referee at the highest level, both for men and women.
