Pirates get on the boat to pitcher that has never launched in LN

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed the right-handed pitcher Chase De Jong, 27, with a contract of minor leagues, details the renowned journalist John Dreker, of pittsburghbaseball.com. The 6’4 ″ (1.93 meter) de Jong has rebounded in the league since the Toronto Blue Jays he was selected in the second round of high school in the 2012 draft.

He never played in the majors for the Blue Jays, or their second organization, the Los Angeles Dodgers. After making it to Triple-A, the Dodgers traded De Jong to the Seattle Mariners, where he finally made his debut during the 2017 season. He surpassed rookie requirements in 2020 with 0.110 major league service days.

Despite only 15 career appearances, the California native has appeared in the major leagues in each of the four seasons since his debut, never making more than seven appearances in a year. Chase Louis De Jong has always pitched in the American League.

Overall, De Jong has a 7.12 ERA / 6.00 FIP in 54 1/3 innings, including 10 starts. At 27, De Jong is young enough to become something different than what we’ve seen of him thus far, especially since he hasn’t seen many opportunities in terms of volume while appearing for the Mariners, Twins, and Astros.

De Jong, a 100-pound Long Beach, California native, was a ranked prospect by Baseball America every season from 2013 to 2018, when he was the 16th prospect in the Mariners organization.
