Fikayo Tomori will be released by Chelsea this winter. The following is an explanation of manager Frank Lampard regarding the decision.
Tomori is having a hard time at Chelsea. Initiated by Lampard last season, the 23-year-old defender is still unable to compete with Kurt Zouma, Antonio Ruediger and Andreas Christensen.
Tomori’s situation became more difficult after the arrival of Thiago Silva, who became a new mainstay at Chelsea’s back line. In total, he only played four times throughout the 2020/2021 season.
AC Milan tried to use this condition. The Italian league giants want to borrow him for half a season.
And tit for tat. Recent reports say Chelsea are willing to let Tomori go, with the option to be bought permanently by the Rossoneri.
Lampard commented on Tomori’s potential transfer in January. He said the player would be released because he did not have a place in his squad.
“Arriving [Tomori] is a developing player. “As a squad, we had four center-backs last year, but I can’t play all four in one game and you try to find consistency at different times,” said Lampard on the club’s official website.
“Fikayo was in it and then it wasn’t. This year, we had five center-backs so things were tough with some of them not playing regularly and that’s why he might be on loan for his development.”
“He is a young player and he has improved a lot in the last two seasons since I worked with him. It will continue and we will find the best way for it,” said Lampard.
Meanwhile, Chelsea also returned to loan Danny Drinkwater. Now, the English midfielder is on loan at Turkish club Kasimpasa.
