MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) – Bob Brett, a tennis coach whose pupils included Grand Slam champions Boris Becker, Goran Ivanisevic and Marin Cilic, has passed away. He was 67 years old.
The Australian Tennis Federation published a tribute to the Australian coach on Wednesday after being informed of the death by the family. Brett suffered from cancer.
“Bob Brett’s passing is a great loss for tennis,” said federation executive director Craig Tiley. who are just beginning to take their steps in the sport that he loved so much ”.
Brett had received the Tim Gullikson Award from the ATP in November for his coaching career.
In addition to working with Becker, Ivanisevic, Cilic and other individual players, Brett was a coach in the national federations of Great Britain, Japan and Canada.
He also opened a private tennis academy in San Remo, Italy.
Brett was Becker’s coach between November 1987 and February 1991, a period in which the German won three of his six Grand Slam titles and climbed to the top of the ATP rankings.
The tennis world reacted with multiple tributes to Brett on social media.
“Very saddened by the passing of Bob Brett, who I collaborated with for 6 years and who taught me so much in my early years as a coach,” wrote Patrick Mouratoglou, who works with Serena Williams, on Twitter.
Brett is survived by his daughters Caroline and Katarina.
