First NBA head coach: Becky Hammon celebrates premiere

Gregg Popovich gave her just three short words for Becky Hammon’s historic service as the first coach in charge of the NBA.

“You get ’em” – something like “you’ve got it under control,” yelled the 71-year-old when the San Antonio Spurs coach was banned from the sidelines by the referees.

The 43-year-old proved this at another premiere in her coaching career. In 2014 she was accepted into the Spurs supervisory staff. A year later, she was allowed to look after the team in the summer, and in 2017 she was allowed to take responsibility in a preparatory game.

Modestly, the 43-year-old didn’t want to make a big deal out of her competitive debut after the 107: 121 against the Los Angeles Lakers. “I didn’t come into the arena and said that I would coach today,” she said after replacing Popovich, “but that’s how it works and you can handle it.”

The respect in the best league in the world for Hammon is very great. The Lakers superstar also paid tribute to her after the game. If someone works hard, they are rewarded with opportunities, said LeBron James of the former professional basketball player. “That was the case today, when she stepped in and proved her work and her skills.”
