FIBA on the podium of the most followed sports federations on social networks

According to a report published by the communications agency BCW Sports, the International Basketball Federation ranks third among the most followed international sports federations on social networks in 2020.

12.23 million. This is the number of FIBA followers at the end of 2020, all social networks combined. This places the International Basketball Federation at the third step of the podium of the most followed sports federations, behind football (2nd, 37.7 million followers) but also… cricket (1st, 59 million).

Indeed, for the first time in four years, the BCW Sports ranking takes into account both Olympic and non-Olympic international sports federations. Thus, 120 international federations were reviewed on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, YouTube, Périscope and TikTok in order to determine the social network footprint of international sports federations.

In a few figures, FIBA is the 2nd most followed international federation on Facebook (6.9 million followers), the 4th most followed on Instragram (1 million) and the 5th on Twitter (437,000). She is also very active on LinkedIn (3rd, 541,000 followers), YouTube (4th, 1.07 million subscribers) and Périscope (1st, 17,000 followers).

In this ranking, we must also remember the good scores obtained by FIBA 3 × 3, which will become an Olympic sport at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. The 3 × 3 federation alone ranks 7th on Facebook, (1.6 million number of followers) or 8th on TikTok (17,700 followers).

“Our study shows that smaller and younger international federations have already gone through what many traditional federations are forced to do right now: digital transformation. They were forced to do so due to the lack of coverage in mainstream media and are now growing rapidly. It is astounding to see Teqball and Cheerleading in the top 10, clearly ahead of many larger Olympic federations. These well-established international federations must act quickly if they are to catch up with the younger ones, who will certainly continue to move forward quickly. This will indeed be an interesting development to follow after the Covid. “
