Davis Cup: ÖTV wants to bring the final tournament to Austria

Davis-Cup

Austria’s Tennis Association (ÖTV) would like to examine the possibility of becoming part of the Davis Cup final tournament as an organizer from November 25th to December 5th. The International Tennis Federation (ITF) would like to relaunch the final tournament with 18 teams after the somewhat unsuccessful premiere. The three groups of six should not only be held in Madrid, but in two other European cities.

The final tournament with Austria, which was postponed in the previous year due to the coronavirus pandemic and which meets Germany and Serbia in its group, could also move to Austria for a third. “We might get the unique chance to be part of this final tournament,” said ÖTV President Magnus Brunner in an association broadcast. “We have already submitted an official expression of interest.”

ITF and the financially strong co-organizer Kosmos Tennis want to improve the schedule for players. So the three group phases are planned in three cities as well as a quarter-finals each for the two additional cities. As the main organizer, Madrid would host two quarter-finals, the semi-finals and the final. Ideally, the group led by Dominic Thiem could play two group games and a quarter-finals at home.

Excited waiting for application documents

“We are eagerly awaiting the application documents,” explained Brunner. “If there is a realistic chance and we can meet the requirements, we will make a final offer.” The associations of the participating European associations have until the end of March to express their interest in the organization. If suitable candidates are found and what can be assumed, the format will be changed.
