The black and yellow land a big point in the top group of the Bundesliga and give Leipzig a bitter damper. At times a wild game develops – but a duo makes the decision.
An important victory for Borussia Dortmund in the top game of the 15th matchday of the Bundesliga: BVB clearly won 3-1 (0-0) at RB Leipzig and with 28 points remains close to the top group. Jadon Sancho (55th) and Erling Haaland (71st, 84th) scored for coach Edin Terzic’s team in an exciting game with wild phases and chances on both sides. Alexander Sörloth (89th) made the final score.
In the end, however, the guests prevailed with a ripped-off performance and gave Julian Nagelsmann’s team a bitter damper – with a win, the Leipzig team (another 31 points) would have taken the lead from FC Bayern Munich (33). Bayer Leverkusen (29) remains third ahead of Dortmund. Against FSV Mainz 05 next Saturday (3:30 p.m.), BVB has the next chance to score three points, RB travels to VfL Wolfsburg.
Reus calls for victory
“This win is extremely good,” said BVB national player Emre Can in an interview with Sky. The last few weeks with the change of coach from Lucien Favre to Edin Terzic were “not that easy”: “Now we want to attack again.” Marco Reus, who played very well, also warned: “We have to show that consistently now – and that over 90 minutes.” Terzic himself was only partially satisfied with the performance of his team: “In the first half we were very good defensively. But today we made a total of 112 bad passes, 110 of which were felt in the first half. So we completely foregone possession We were able to correct that in the second half and rewarded ourselves with three beautiful goals. “
In the long tactical game, 45 minutes was enough this time. BVB are still five points apart from the front runner Bayern Munich, who had lost at Borussia Mönchengladbach. RB, for whom Alexander Sörloth (89.) scored late, is two points behind the record champions. “We have to learn from this game,” said Yussuf Poulsen, disappointed.
Both teams neutralized each other at the beginning
Terzic relied on the formation from the last 2-0 against Wolfsburg, with which BVB had reported better after critical weeks. Haaland, who returned from a hamstring against VfL, stormed ahead of Giovanni Reyna, Reus and Sancho. At the start of the game, however, the Leipziger were more present, who played the ball well through the rows and hardly allowed Dortmund to develop because of the rare possession.
Dortmund was solid in defense, however, and did not allow the hosts who came again and again. Towards the end of the round, BVB pressed a little more aggressively, but both teams visibly neutralized each other in a carefully managed game.
BVB turned on after the break
Leipzig therefore had the first halfway dangerous opportunity from afar. Attacking man Dani Olmo (41st) shot a chipball blocked by the Dortmund defense from the edge of the penalty area about one meter over the BVB goal. After the break, BVB turned up and pushed Leipzig in phases in their own half. Reus from an acute angle and Emre Can with a header (both 49th) could have put Dortmund in the lead.
The Terzic-Elf now played out efficient opportunities, after an assault by Haaland Reus put the hoe on the free-standing Sancho, who hit from close range. Ten minutes after the goal, Haaland only hit the crossbar after RB goalkeeper Peter Gulacsi had deflected the ball decisively.
Only two minutes later, Olmo missed the chance to equalize when he failed from five meters from the post. Shortly thereafter, Haaland nodded a Sancho flank to his eleventh goal of the season. The twelfth followed: It was his 25th goal in the 25th Bundesliga game.
