Bots / Plum and Pea wins the Nations Cup; Bērziņš and Vītola finish second

Latvian sledge riders Mārtiņš Bots / Roberts Plūme and Ulla Zirne won the Nations Cup on the Sigulda track on Friday, but Gints Bērziņš and Elīna Ieva Vītola took second place, qualifying for the sixth stage of the World Cup over the weekend.

The Latvian two over the German duo Robins Geieke / David Gamms by 12.105 seconds in the 12 duo competition.

On Saturday, Andris Šics / Juris Šics and Oskars Gudramovičs / Pēteris Kalniņš will also compete in the main competition for prizes in the European Championship.

In the men’s competition, the only representative of Latvia, Gints Bērziņš, started as the seventh of 26 luge athletes and won the second place, 0.362 seconds behind the winning Russian Pavel Repilov.

Artūrs Dārznieks and Riks Kristens Rozītis had already secured a place in the World Cup on Saturday.

Zirne won the women’s competition in the competition of 25 athletes, which was 0.051 seconds ahead of Vītols. She will join Kendia Aparjode and Eliza Tīruma in the World Cup.

Men and doubles will compete in the World Cup on Saturday, and women and relay teams on Sunday.

130 sleigh riders from 23 countries have applied to start the fifth stage of the World Cup.

The World Cup season takes place only in Europe.

After the stage in Sigulda, where the athletes will also compete for the European Championship medals, in January there will also be stages in Oberhof and Innsbruck, but at the end of the month, the sleigh riders will return to Königsze, where the world championship will take place. The season finale is scheduled for early February in St. Moritz, where the World Cup has not taken place since January 2012.
