With over a thousand matches played since its founding in 1932, the Washington Football Team is one of the most important and traditional franchises in the NFL. Originally raised in Boston, the team moved to Washington in 1937 and in the first year at the new house, they were already champions. The first glorious decade of history began: the team reached six finals from 1936 to 1945. In addition to 37, the team also raised the cup in 1942.
After the success in 45, one of the biggest drought periods in the league’s history began. Washington spent 24 years without playing a single playoff game – twelve of them in a row with more defeats than victories. Panorama that changed in 1971 with the arrival of coach George Allen. Commanding names like QB Billy Kilmer and RB Larry Brown, Allen led the team to postseason five times from 71 to 76. The team from the American capital reached the first Super Bowl in that period, in 1972, but fell against the Miami Dolphins by Bob Griese.
After hitting the post, it was with coach Joe Gibbs in the early 1980s that the team had its second glorious decade. The coach took Washington seven times to the playoffs in the period – between 1982 and 1991. Of those seven, on three occasions he reached the Super Bowl and won all of them. (1982, 1987 and 1991). Since then the team has not done much and has reached the postseason only five times in 22 years.
The year 2020 has forever marked the franchise’s history. After decades of complaints about the old name, the franchise owner, Dan Snyder, gave in to the pressure and decided to adopt “Washington Football Team”, in principle on a temporary basis, during the first year.
On the pitch, the promise is for better days with the arrival of coach Ron Rivera, promising Chase Young in defense and in the evolution of young QB Dwayne Haskins.
