Red Devil Kevin De Bruyne finished in fifth place in the poll to indicate who became FIFA Player of the Year. The Manchester City midfielder was credited with 26 points (percentage scoring points based on votes of coaches, captains, media and fans). Eden Hazard, captain of the Red Devils and therefore entitled to vote, did not put De Bruyne in the first place.

Pole Robert Lewandowski won with 52 points, ahead of the Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo (38), the Argentinian Lionel Messi (35) and the Senegalese Sadio Mané (29). The Egyptian Mohamed Salah (25), the Frenchman Kylian Mbappé (19), the Spaniard Thiago Alcantara (17), the Brazilian Neymar (16) and the Dutchman Virgil van Dijk (13) completed the top ten.

De Bruyne was put in first place eighteen times by the coaches and captains. Among others by his own national coach Roberto Martinez, who also had points for Lewandowski and Alcantara. Vital Borkelmans, national coach of Jordan, also placed De Bruyne on one. Eden Hazard, his captain with the Red Devils, put De Bruyne in third place, after Lewandowski and Spaniard Sergio Ramos, a teammate of Hazard at Real Madrid. Hazard himself came in eighth in the referendum last year.

Winner Lewandowski, Ronaldo and Messi also voted as captain of their national team. Lewandowski chose Alcantara, Neymar and De Bruyne, Ronaldo put the names of Lewandowski, Messi and Mbappé on his ballot paper, Messi entered those of Neymar, Mbappé and Lewandowski. (belga)
